sweet dreams and nightmares
Did I dream up the events of Election Day? That was last Tuesday, the 4th, when newspaper stands and boxes displayed huge photos of Adrienne Shelly with giant headlines like "Slain" and "Murdered". It was absolutely surreal to stand on 57th Street staring at this...Did I think, over a decade ago, that one day I would be in a world where this would happen to the actress I most admired and looked up to at the time?
It was seriously like a bizarre nightmare, the kind where I wake up and say, I had that this really weird dream where something horrible happened to the girl from Trust*.
And then I would probably analyze the symbolism and say something like does this mean that I feel like I'm being shot down, and that I can only trust myself?
Then again if you read the "work" of Jane Roberts, aka the Seth Books, there's a fine line between dream and reality - something that happens in "real" life, say a thunderstorm, is also symbolism for say, the release of stress and emotions among the people in the area.
On Election Day I also wondered if I had stepped into an alternate political reality, to avoid the sorrow of Election Day 2004... It's definitely a time to celebrate, with the Democrats dominating the House and Senate. People voted in record numbers on Tuesday, and everyone who has participated in spreading the word about bringing peace and sanity back to our government, and international realtions, had a part in this. Authors, activists, and big mouths alike.
Nomi Prins sums up who was affected by the election on her blog this week: http://nomiprins.blogspot.com/2006/11/top-ten-most-affected-by-election.html
(Folks like Rummy, Paris Hilton, and Nancy Pelosi's stylist)
If you can take the good with the bad (sorry about the cliche), we're gonna be ok.
* Andy Ostroy, one my favorite political bloggers, and Adrienne Shelly's grieving husband, posts a beautiful yet simple homage to his wife at http://www.ostroyreport.blogspot.com/#111106. He posts the photo of her Trust character at the end of Hartley's film...it's an image that makes me weepy.
